Volkswagen marketed specific diesel powered vehicles as "clean" and environmentally friendly that are not emissions compliant. They bilked the US government and lied to the american public while accepting financial incentives for selling these "alleged" clean vehicles here in the states. Not only do these vehicles not pass Federal Emissions Standards, they are programmed to pollute the atmosphere at a higher rate in favor of performance when not being monitored. Volkswagen's PR Firm is "spinning" this debacle and suggesting that these vehicles can be "fixed" now? They are calling it "refitting" which will most likely be a low cost alternative to buying the vehicle back or replacing the engine with one that meets US Emissions standards.
The owners of these defective VW Vehicles are entitled to financial compensation before the US Government imposes fines against VW. NHTSA & EPA should force Volkswagen to buy back all the defective vehicles first, then impose fines. The owners of these defective VW Vehicles will no longer be able to register them and use them legally on US Roads and it is unfair that VW be allowed to try to retrofit them and force the owners to keep a vehicle that is not emissions compliant. Most of these vehicles were less than $37,500 new and that is the amount the US Government can finer VW on a per vehicle basis. No backroom deals should be cut before the owners of these vehicles get compensated.
